One of the most remarkable experiences I had in 2012 was being a part of the medical staff aboard the MV Explorer for The University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program. I was honored to work with the two MDs Greg Gallik and Anne McKee, and my fellow psychologist Mary Andres. We worked with an incredibly caring staff and faculty and truly remarkable students for a hundred day voyage around the rim of the Atlantic Ocean. Working as a psychologist on a floating university is an experience I will never forget, and professionally I’m not certain I’ll have a chance to do anything this spectacular again. I will miss having breakfast on deck with views of nothing but ocean in all directions, but I may not miss doing psychotherapy in the belly of the ship while slightly nauseous from seasickness. If you have any questions about Semester at Sea please email me.
